After Juneteenth and July 4th, I heard several discussions that speak to freedom. Some of these discussions became abrasive and confrontational due to different belief systems and definitions of the word freedom. I would like to take a moment to share my ideals related to freedom.

Freedom is something that indicates liberation, unrestricted abilities, and independent movement. Although these are customary definitions we often see the focus of discussions used to indicate unrest, inequality, and a depiction of visible challenges. During this time of social and racial unrest it is imperative to use platforms to discuss and demand changes that are catalytic to ensuring that all have freedom. With this being said, it is also important that we remember to build on freedoms that DO exist.

First, each of us have the freedom of thought process. A thought process is your personal cognitive ability to examine, reason, problem solve, and make a judgement. When this judgement is made you have the responsibility to act accordingly.

Second, we have the freedom to create standards based on our now “checked” and commitment to our thought process. To create standards we must be influencers. The power of influence comes from action and not just idle talk.

Third, the freedom of “supply and demand”. Respect has an expectation that it will be given without coorecement. Ideally it is supplied by the giver and of their own volition. However, like many other adjustments we must make as conscientious adults, there are times the ideal is not the norm. A demand for respect is within you and is how you use the volume of your voice.

Fourth and lastly, WE have the freedom to make changes. WE is a collective word and is inclusive of all who assign or can be positive contributors in your beliefs. Those who align with you may not look like you, speak your language, or even have the same experiences. At times people who are dismissed from the conversation or campaign are your power sources.

Let's remember to exercise our freedoms! Like the physical body, if you do not exercise it you will indeed lose the muscle, the strength, and become consumed with unhealthy fat that impede your ability to be mobile. Concentrating on the freedom that no one can take and using them to create freedoms that are more tangible and visible are the goal and assignment.

You have the power to make a difference but it must first start with you.
