Quality vs Quantity

Quality over quantity is a question that we often use to gauge success. As the world continues to prepare for how we are going to educate our children I thought how we have collectively arrived at an impasse in so many areas of our lives. How do we transition without losing quality? This topic is huge and can be relatable in so many different areas but undeniably require different formulas. For the purpose of this blog let's talk specifically to parents, educators, and the administration that makes the decisions about school.

After this past school year we are able to see that quality is of great importance over the quantity or what is currently customarily. Across the country we've seen administrations put virtual classwork together that were, in most cases. substandard to say the least based on my experience. I do understand that this Pandemic offered up challenges that there was no way they could have prepared for. None were prepared for these abrupt changes and new requirements and responsibilities. While hoping, praying, and expecting things to be different and back to normal we are again faced with uncharted territory. A school year that will, at least for most, will start virtually. I think this is the most prudent idea but it requires preparation. How do you place yourself in a position of leverage making sure your children get the quality of education they deserve?

First, we must position ourselves to become part of the solution by being proactive. In most areas, school has not quite started but is up and coming in the next couple of weeks. Have you spoken with the administrators at your child’s school to request an answer to your questions? It is presumed that teachers will have all the answers but I’m sure would appreciate us reaching out to the “decision makers”. How is your school preparing for open house with social distancing? You should be able to get the same standard of information as you would have when we were in person.

Second, be willing to be flexible and have a plan A, B,and C. Go into this school year feeling empowered to make a choice that is good for you but be positive. Don't be scared to change to meet the needs of your child or your lifestyle. If virtual learning is working for you for the first 9 weeks but you feel the quality is not meeting your expectations then it is not a defeat if you must reexamine and make changes.

Third, become vested and make this challenge a priority. Our children are watching what we do. Create the atmosphere that will be most effective for your child. That may mean that you have to spend time looking over material so you can be a resource. That may mean that suggested reading time has to be done in an alternative schedule than is suggested. Talk about things with your teacher. Look for ways to level the playing field and the ultimate success for your child and family.

Most of all do not allow the “new norm” to create a fog in your vision or the success of this 20-21 school year. Command your space and know that flexibility is not a characteristic of the weak. You are amazing and worth it. Your children and our educational system needs you to make it a successful year.
